This Sunday the biggest rivalry in the NBA comes to live one more time.
The Boston Celtics travel to Los Angeles to play the Los Angeles Lakers in the Staples Centre. It will most likely be an exciting showcase of the best basketball in the world. The Boston Celtics, with a 34-10 record and the LA Lakers, with a 33-13, met in the NBA finals last year and in the 2007-2008 season resulting in one title each. But this story will focus on the rivalry between the two titans.
The rivalry started in the 60’s with players like Bill Russel and Bob Cousy for Boston and Jerry West for the Lakers. It continued in the 80’s when Boston’s number 33, Larry Bird and LA’s Magic Johnson met in the finals in 84, 85 and 87. Later it has been said that the epic Finals between these two team saved the NBA, which was struggling with low attendances.
With Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls 90’s dynasty and Magic’s and Bird’s retirements the rivalry temporarily died but in 2008 the rivalry came to full life again, as the Boston and the Lakers got to the Finals once again. The Celtics won the title this time with players like Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.
The two team also met up in last years NBA Finals. The Lakers won the titel that year, but this year is Boston's time again!
The famous slogan “Beat LA” originated in Game 7 of the 82 Eastern Conference when Boston fans urged the Philadelphia 76:ers, who won the game against Boston, to beat LA and has since then become a classic chant at the Boston Garden aswell as a popular t-shirt print.
Be sure to check out the game on Sunday. It's gonna be amazing!
